Iyengar Yoga focuses on integrated alignment. It’s about taking the body through its ranges of motion, working from the inside out, learning one’s boundaries, increasing stamina and nurturing equanimity. Asana includes standing poses, seated poses, backbends, forward bends, twists and inversions. Sequences are designed to affect the systems of the body in particular ways while poses are typically held for longer periods of time to deepen their effects. Students are given individual attention and props are used to ensure stability and that all can access their innate intelligence.
By piercing one’s attention inward through skillful action, the fluctuations of the mind are stilled, promoting well-being and peace. Iyengar practitioners believe this type of practice creates space and harmony in the organic body, promotes circulation, balances the flow of energy, and leads to, in time, a transformation of consciousness.
Certified Iyengar teachers are required to pass rigorous examinations at progressive levels throughout their lifetime, requiring extensive knowledge and skill in asana, pranayama, philosophy, modifications and therapeutics.
